Ontario replaced its Endangered Species Act with a new framework that narrows automatic habitat protections and streamlines approvals for development and resource projects. Supporters say the old rules delayed housing and infrastructure without clear benefit. Opponents, including many biologists, say weaker habitat rules will accelerate species decline. The changes took effect recently and remain contested.
