OPENED JUL 18
Ontario's electricity system operator has procured new and expanded natural gas-fired generation to meet rising demand and support the grid during peak periods. Supporters say gas plants provide reliable power that renewables alone cannot yet guarantee. Opponents say new gas increases emissions and conflicts with climate targets, favouring storage, efficiency and clean sources. Procurements and plant approvals are ongoing.
