Shadow Referendum Q9: Should provincial laws take priority over federal laws in shared jurisdiction?
Official Question 9 on Alberta's October 19, 2026 referendum ballot reads: "Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to better protect provincial rights from federal interference by giving a province's laws dealing with provincial or shared areas of constitutional jurisdiction priority over federal laws when the province's laws and federal laws conflict?" This proposal mirrors the official ballot question. Supporters argue it would end federal overreach into provincial matters. Opponents argue federal paramountcy in shared areas keeps national standards coherent. Vote Support for Yes, Oppose for No — exactly as you would on the official ballot.
