Shadow Referendum Q6: Should provinces select their own superior court justices?
Official Question 6 on Alberta's October 19, 2026 referendum ballot reads: "Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to have provincial governments, and not the federal government, select the justices appointed to provincial King's Bench and Appeal courts?" This proposal mirrors the official ballot question. Supporters argue provinces should choose the judges who interpret provincial law. Opponents argue federal appointment insulates courts from local political pressure. Vote Support for Yes, Oppose for No — exactly as you would on the official ballot.
